Pendant Light Ranges For

Harvey Interiors.

Brief.

My brief was to go into the unit where the wasted materials are kept from the Shopfitting factory and repurpose the offcuts and wasted pieces into functional pendant lights. This was broken into 2 miner tasks, by making 2 lights with multiple materials in contrast and 3 lights using the CNC machine on sight, after completing the design and production process, I was asked to redesign the website as well as creating a social media account to upload individual furniture products as well as creating adverts and working with Facebook/Instagram algorithms to maximize sales. social media marketing.

Inspiration.

I needed to keep to a very rustic style as that is the established reputation from Harvey Interiors. I looked at basic shapes around the factory surroundings and tried to incorporate them into the design.

Specifications.

•3 of the pendant lights were limited to the CNC production process using MDF offcuts.

•Where the other 2 I was asked to use multiple locally wasted offcut materials lying around within the factory I was working in.

•The 3 CNC'd lights will be flat packed and sent out the customer with assembly instructions. These lights are available in a variety of colors to ensure a wide target market.

•The other 2 lights will be shipped off assembled and are one-off products. they contradict steel with timber and have a very rustic feel to them. These lights are aimed at a very specific target market.

Project Breakdown.

I started researching the manufacturing process of a CNC machine as this was new to me and I had no experience prior. After researching and understanding the limitations and restriction I had due to this manufacturing process, I started with the design process creating quick sketches which then turned into concept boards, I completed 2 concepts for each light and presented them to my supervisor. After he had decided which ones to go for I then went onto the computer to draw out my lights on AlphaCAM (the drawing program for the CNC machine). I then through trial and error completed the wooden shapes and made sure they could slot into each other and be assembled easily but not filling apart once assembled. The next step was to decide the colors and give it to the spray booth. after the lights had been sprayed I snagged them and once I had approved the quality of each piece of all 3 lights they were assembled photographed and uploaded onto the website and social media.

The Other 2 lights were slightly different as I was asked to use a range of waste materials I could find around the factory. As I walked around my mid was racing I had quite a wide range the trick was these light needed to have a rustic feel. for this reason, I decided to use a contrast between steel and mahogany timber strips. I spent a while rummaging through the pile of wood making sure I was grabbing the same wood as the monocot finish would come out different if I used a variety of wood types. these wooden slats have been contrasted with different arrangements of square steel tubes. I decided to add to the rustic look it would be quite nice to add acid to the steel to give it rust. after this was all designed and the materials are chosen I used the knowledge and experience of the workers in the factory to assist with the cutting welding and fixing the lights. The long square light was designed to create shadows giving the entire interior space it is hanging in a complete makeover using light. the other light has a movable arm which depending on where the polished shiny arm sits there will be a different feel, meaning the client can adjust it to follow the lines of the interior space.
